What to Expect During Your First Riding Lesson at Sienna Rock Stables

You Don't Need Any Experience

The most common thing we hear from new riders is: "I've never done this before — is that okay?" The answer is always yes. Our Intro & Evaluation Lesson is specifically designed for first-timers, and we start from the very beginning.

Here's exactly what happens during your first visit.

Step 1: Arrival and Introduction (5 minutes)

When you arrive, you'll be greeted by your instructor and given a brief tour of the barn. We'll go over basic safety rules — where to walk, how to move around horses, and what to expect during the lesson.

Step 2: Meet Your Horse (10 minutes)

We'll introduce you to the horse you'll be riding today. You'll learn how to approach a horse safely, how to read basic body language, and how to groom and prepare your horse for riding. This is one of our favorite parts — most people are surprised by how quickly they feel comfortable.

Step 3: Tacking Up (5 minutes)

With your instructor's guidance, you'll learn how to put on the saddle and bridle. We'll explain each piece of equipment and why it matters. You won't be expected to do this independently on your first visit — it's just an introduction.

Step 4: Mounting and First Ride (20 minutes)

Your instructor will help you mount safely and get comfortable in the saddle. We'll start at a walk, focusing on your position, balance, and basic steering. Depending on your comfort level, we may progress to a trot by the end of the lesson.

Step 5: Debrief and Next Steps (5 minutes)

After dismounting, your instructor will share observations about your riding and recommend the best lesson program for your goals. This is a great time to ask questions.
